With clear weather reports being in place for days showing a major storm approaching, and with limited facilities to deal with your plane, why would you send an A380 into the JFK region today?

Seems fine to me, kind of the point of airline to get people from place to place. The diversions not great, but I’d imagine it works better for most people to be on the right side of the ocean. Its not like Newburg is that far away, they can probably arrange a bus (though I might have preferred landing a BWI and taking the Acela to NYC instead).

I get the point of an airline, but knowing that only certain airports are equipped to deal with a 380, that even basic equipment like jetways and stairs are an issue, and that there was a very high likelihood of diversion I think it was a poor choice to send in the big bird.

You know you’ve been watching too much Hoonigan when you see send it as “YO SEND IT” followed by tire screeching

Would have thought Dorval or Pearson would be their alternate, but I wonder what they were expecting conditions at JFK to be at their arrival time, when they took off.

CAT-3c ability is precision approach and landing with no decision height and no runway visual range limitation. So, bad weather? It’ll still get there unles the braking action is reported “nill” but they have snow and appropriate equipment.
As a pilot, hell no would I want to go, but those suckas got no choice.

The weather did take it to a destination other than the one intended. Even with all the bells and whistles. The 380 is a capable aircraft, but when you are dependent on specialized equipment for proper deplane operatione, and it is pretty clear that JFK is very likely going to be closed, you know your options are going to be limited. It seems to me it would have been smarter to use the aircraft’s range to get them to Chicago, Montreal or a better suited field.

I work for a handler at YYZ that handled a lot of the diversions. We had the Korean Air A380 and a few other widebodys. YYZ actually stopped accepting diversions at 19:30.
